On the afternoon of December 26, 2023, in accordance with the 2023-2024 Youth Union and Children’s Movement program of the Quế Sơn District Council of Ho Chi Minh Young Pioneers’ Organization (HYPO), Inter-Chapter of HYPO of the Quế An Secondary School collaborated with Teach For Viet Nam teachers to organize an activity to enhance foreign language skills for local children under the theme “Vietnamese Children – Reaching out to the World”. 🌊✈️

A cultural exchange session with guests from India, including teacher Nikunj Agarwal from Teach For India, helped inspire the children to learn about Indian culture. This rare meeting also provided a valuable learning opportunity for all students to enhance their cultural knowledge, build confidence, and develop English communication skills with foreigners.

Phạm Nguyễn Đức Anh, a 6th-cohort fellow from Teach For Viet Nam, currently teaching English at Quế An Secondary School, Quế Sơn district, enthusiastically shared: “As a former International Relations HCMC USSH student, I have always been aware of the importance of language communication skills and knowledge of different cultures in helping young people reaching out to the world. Therefore, I believe that early exposure to inspirational people from diverse cultures beyond one’s own understanding will give students the opportunity to understand and appreciate their own hometown culture and Vietnamese culture, learn to communicate openly, embrace new things, and be motivated to learn more about other countries and cultures.

I still remember vividly the feeling of being confused and hesitant about my English speaking ability when I first attempted to communicate with a foreign lady visiting my dormitory during high school. The moment she heard and understood my question, I felt an immense joy. But during the remaining times, when I tried to recall all the vocabulary and structures I had learned but still couldn’t communicate beyond basic greetings. I became more strongly aware of the need to further refine my communication skills for effective English communication.

From that “first time”, I’ve always nurtured the desire to enable students at Quế An to also experience such inspirational “first times”. Whether it’s the first time asking a meaningful question, the first time correctly answering an English riddle, the first time teaching a foreign guest to speak Vietnamese, or the first time overcoming shyness and self-doubt to engage in conversation with a foreign guest… these moments will create natural learning experiences and inspire future “first times”.

Finally, I sincerely appreciate the support from the school, the collective efforts of Teach For Viet Nam staff, and the assistance from all relevant stakeholders and local resources to turn these precious “first time” moments into reality.”
